Pawz Dog Boots are a dog's best friend.

Halladay spent the beginning of his first winter trotting around in the most expensive dog boots we could find. Like many first time pet parents, we thought expensive = best. We giggled like little school girls the first time Halladay wore the boots, because he spent several minutes walking around like Bambi, acting as though he had just discovered the use of his limbs for the first time. It was nothing short of awesome.

Sadly, the awesomeness was short lived. A couple of days after wearing the boots Halladay began ripping out the fur on his paws, causing me to think he had dog Trichotillomania (it does exist). Soon after he developed a pretty grotesque hot spot that began oozing puss.

A trip to the vet told us that he likely had allergies to the boots, so they were tossed into the miscellaneous dog box, never to be seen again. Worst $60.00 (plus the vet visit) ever spent.

After that experience we were paranoid and promised Halladay we would never subject him to the evilness of booties again.

Fast forward three years to a pretty cold winter, and we've now found ourselves with a schnoodle who walks slower than a snail due to the freezing temperatures and salty sidewalks. We haven't let go of our hatred for fabric booties, so we thought we would give Pawz Dog Boots a try.

Made of natural rubber, these booties are disposable yet re-usable. They don't have any padding inside which is very helpful for dogs who can't quite get the hang of normal booties. Truthfully, they look like empty water balloons. For $12.00 a box (which includes 12 booties) it seemed like a no-brainer.

Ronald McDonald booties

After watching Wookie and Halladay bust out their fanciest robot moves, they figured it out eventually and we were ready to head out into the great outdoors to test them out.

I wish I could have taken photos of them romping around in the snow in these bright red booties, but it was like -45 C with the windchill (I'm not at all kidding) and I kind of like my fingers. All I can say is that it was an absolute success, and now a week later, Halladay hasn't had any kind of allergic reaction to them.

If your dog is need of a little foot protection and they aren't crazy about regular booties, give these bad boys a try -- you won't be sorry.

  1. Good to know. We have just enough days that are that cold to make it worth while. Enjoy the warmth today!

    1. Despite the leaky basement, I enjoyed the + temps. We definitely got spoiled last week.

  2. I have them for my Bulldog, but we find them very tight... And I think they're cutting of his circulation. I'll try the larger size up but I think the boot sacs (?) will be too loose then.

But I'm happy their working for you, I wanna look into those Skyliners from Ruffwear.

    1. I'm using a size small (I think) for my guys. The top are tight, but they don't feel like they're cutting off circulation. There is more wiggle room in the sack area than I thought there would be for a size small, but it seems to work.

If you buy them from a really awesome store, they will probably let you return them if they don't fit!

  3. It's hard to imagine how any dog bootie could possible stay on! I mean, there's nothing to grab! So this seems like a good workaround: disposables. Pretty good idea!

We were hiking in Harriman State Park (New York) over the weekend and met a couple with their recently-rescued (yay!) pit bulls. They were really wrestling with the booties, and there was snow and ice on the ground. Wish I'd come across this boots sooner. Thanks for the post.

    1. So far we haven't had one instance of a bootie falling off, and we've used them several times now -- and there's been a lot of running. Back when we used fabric booties, we were constantly picking them up after they fell of Halladay.

We've also only had to throw out one bootie due to Wookie's ridiculously sharp nails. I really expected to be going through these faster, but that's not the case.

    1. Wookie turns into turbo Wookie when he's wearing the boots - not sure what that's about, but it's hilarious nonetheless. Apparently these boots make them happy!

    1. Give them a go! If they don't work, you can probably return them depending on where they were purchased. We buy everything from Critter Jungle and they've been incredibly accommodating anytime we need to return something -- including open bags of food!

  6. Oh Mel - you are so FUNNY - I LOL to a lot of your posts...... but just looking at those two with the booties on is hilarious ..... we don't have your extreme cold here - just as well because I can see Rubie keeping on those for about .02 of a nano second! But I'm glad you found a solution!!
